I've been doing some research lately on homeschooling in the Montessori tradition vs. sending your child to a Montessori school.

I've found a variety of opinions but haven't yet decided what I prefer to do with my own child.

In this search I've stumbled upon the term "unschooling". It hasn't been the first time I've heard the term; this time I just did a little more research on it.

I find there are some similarities between Montessori education and Unschooling.

Here's an interesting quote I thought I would share:

"I am beginning to suspect all elaborate and special systems of education. They seem to me to be built upon the supposition that every child is a kind of idiot who must be taught to think. Whereas, if the child is left to himself, he will think more and better, if less showily. Montessori Geometric Insets - Part 1

The Montessori Geometric Insets are really a gem, in my eyes.

If you don't believe me hear it from the woman herself:

‘These drawings perfect a child’s skill in that they oblige him to draw lines of different lengths and make him ever more skillful and sure in the use of this hands… I do not believe that any means could be found more efficacious in gaining such a victory in less time and which could afford so much amusement to a child. " Discovery of the Child, Maria Montessori

What are they?

10 geometric shapes in plastic or metal. They each have a frame, like individual puzzles.

What is the learning objective?

- To teach differences in shapes
- To develop the child’s muscles for holding a pencil correctly.
- To develop control and precision of movement with flexibility.
-Indirect preparation for art development of pattern and use of colour.

You can buy these Insets made of metal or plastic or you can make them on your own for much cheaper using heavy duty poster board. I bought a plastic set on Ebay for a great deal (Ebay is GREAT for Montessori deals!) since I wanted mine to last through many children.

Part 1

This exercise is very simple and I believe can be done with a very young child:

1. Using one shape at a time, take inset and frame to the child's table and remove inset from frame.

2. Going clockwise, trace with the index finger the outside of the inset and the outline of the frame's inside edge. (this is a great exercise for refinement of small motor skills and concentration)

3. Tell the child, " This is a circle," etc.

4. Ask the child to point out objects in the room that are circles

5. Proceed in this manner with the remaining geometric shapes, using Step 1 to 4 for each, as well as using the three period lesson.

6. Show the child how each inset fits into its own frame.

7. Finally present the full tray of insets and frames, remove all the insets, and have the child replace them.

Control of Error: Insets will fit only in their correct frame.

In the book Teaching Montessori in the Home, the Pre-School Years (great book and investment!) the author suggests that the ages for this activity is from 2 1/2 - 5. However I believe a child of MUCH younger could accomplish this Part 1 activity of the Geometric Insets.

Part 2 of the Geometric insets gets a little more challenging and fun....I just started it with my own daughter so I will be writing a post on it soon.

Colors in Nature Walk

My daughter loves taking walks.

She would walk for hours if only I wouldn't wear out.

I made up this Colors in Nature sheet for her to use on the walks we take, you can download it here.

I laminated the sheet for durability and added pockets for each color out of laminated paper as well.

My daughter really loved looking for different colors in the environment and putting them in the corresponding pockets.

I think it really helped her to open her eyes a little more to what her surroundings are made of.

Vinegar Cleans Dish Brushes!

See this dish brush?

Beautiful, clean, spotless....

And it's probably only one time in the life of your dish brush that it will EVER be that clean again.

The worst is when you're scrubbing cheese off dishes and the whole thing just gets covered in a gooey mess and you are very tempted to throw it out cause, gosh you wouldn't want to scrub any more dishes with it looking like that! (especially when you have dairy allergies in the household like I do!)

BUT I have a solution for you! Aren't you thrilled? :)

Honestly, it is the small joys in my life that keep me going.

VINEGAR!

My favorite new cleaning solution :)

How to:

-Put your Dish Brush in a cup

- Fill it up with vinegar (enough to cover the brush)

- Wait an hour or two, or overnight

- Rinse with HOT water

If all the gunk doesn't completely come out just use a fork to get between the bristles.

And voila!

You can feel content again scrubbing dishes with your now clean as new Dish Brush.

Two Great Counting Activities

I am on a File Folder Activity role since I finally got around to getting cute file folders at Michaels and finding an old filing box to keep them in.

Ahhh, I love getting organized.

Here two great counting activities.

The first one my daughter loved.

You put the corresponding muber of apple cards in each pocket. It was the perfect amount of challenge for my two year old, but easy enough that she enjoyed it and actually wanted to do it again.

This next one was a bit more difficult, but a good difficult.

As long as I prompted her and asked her how many balloons, finger, ducks, etc. there were, she was able to count on her own and for the most part understand that you had to match it up next to the corresponding number.

I Clean with Vinegar

Yes. I do.

And that's all I clean with (for the most part).

Something about the extreme chemically smell of cleaning products has always bothered me.

I never wanted to breathe the fumes in....and now after doing research I have good reason not to!

So I use vinegar.

For my counters, toilet, shower, windows, mirrors, etc.

Here's what I found out about vinegar:

"Heinz company spokesperson Michael Mullen references numerous studies to show that a straight 5 percent solution of vinegar—the kind you can buy in the supermarket—kills 99 percent of bacteria, 82 percent of mold, and 80 percent of germs (viruses). . He noted that Heinz can’t claim on their packaging that vinegar is a disinfectant since the company has not registered it as a pesticide with the Environmental Protection Agency. However, it seems to be common knowledge in the industry that vinegar is powerfully antibacterial. Even the CBS news show “48 Hours” had a special years ago with Heloise reporting on tests from The Good Housekeeping Institute that showed this."

So here's what I do:

I fill a spray bottle with a solution of vinegar & water; either 1:2 or 1:3, depending on how I'm feeling or what I am using it for.

You can either spray it on the desired area and wipe off immediately or you can let it sit if you want it to work harder.

For my mirrors & windows I spray it on and wipe it off....streak free, for real!

In the shower, I spray it on all over and let it sit for a while. Then I usually go back spray it again and wipe it off, using a scouring pad in places that needs it.

To clean my toilet, I pour straight vinegar in, filling the toilet up just past the top of the water, in order to get that mucky ring off. I leave it for 30 minutes then dip my toilet brush in the water/vinegar, pour baking soda all over the brush and dip it back in the toilet to scrub, scrub, scrub.

On the kitchen or bathroom counters (and walls) I just spray and wipe off.

Here's another tip for using vinegar in the kitchen for cleaning:

"Keep a clean spray bottle filled with straight 5 percent vinegar in your kitchen near your cutting board, and in your bathroom, and use them for cleaning. I often spray the vinegar on our cutting board before going to bed at night, and don’t even rinse, but let it set overnight. The smell of vinegar dissipates within a few hours."

One of the BIG pluses for cleaning with a safe and natural cleaner is that I feel comfortable having my daughter help me! One more practical life skill I am able to teach her and she really loves spraying the spray bottle :)

Oh yeah and the fact that it is SO much cheaper than traditional cleaners!!

Montessori Quote of the Day

Math is difficult for so many people.

I, myself, have never had a problem with math.

I can easily visualize things in my head and I have always enjoyed it.

My husband, is completely the opposite.

He struggles tremendously with it.

We have always just attributed it to certain strengths and weaknesses that we each have.

But can it really be that simple?

One inherent difference is that I attended a Montessori school during my early grade school years (thanks mom!) and he didn't. Of course you can't simply blame the difference in one's schooling for a lack or strength in core subjects such as math...or can you?

All I know is that the way Montessori teaches math concepts in such a concrete, hands on way, I really don't see how anyone could fail....honestly. If someone is not naturally gifted at math, I really can see how the Montessori method would help them reaach a higher level of achievment than would the traditional method of teaching math in other schools.

That's my two cents, I will be posting more later on specific math concept activities I am using and will be using with my daughter....so check back later!

Describe Yourself: First Time Parent

I really wanted a chair that my two year old could get in and out of by herself and one that actually went with our decor. This chair caught my eye and I have to say it is everything I had expected. I really love the fact that if necessary I can scoot her into the table all the way and she can't get out :) Like those times that she really needs to finish all those vegetables.
She just LOVES it, climbing in and out is so easy for her. I love the fact that it's adjustable. I also love the fact that I can scoot it up to the kitchen counter and have her stand on the bottom step to help me with food preparation. It is MUCH safer than having her stand on a chair, since I know she can get down on her own and that she's not too far from the ground.

Upper & Lower Case ABC Activity

I was so happy to find this activity online.

It's a file folder acticity, which means (when I find the time) you attach the activity to the inside of a file folder and add an envelope to keep all the pieces together.

It's a great way to stay organized...again, when I find the time.

But for now I just laminted the pages/cards and it works just as well.

The object is to match the lower case letter cards to the upper case letter on the sheet.

This was perfect for my daughter since she tends to mix up a lot of the lower case letters like d, p, b, q....etc.

This is how I do the activity with her:

I put the pile of cards in front of her

"What is that?"

"An 'r'"

"Yes, that's a small 'r', where is the big 'R'?"

She does pretty well with it and enjoys it for the most part.

Homemade All Natural Hair Wax that REALLY works

I am proud to say that my husband is the reason for this post.

He told me yesterday that he was thinking of making his own hair wax...hmmm, nice thought, right? Especially since it's so expensive and he goes through it so quickly.

So I bought him the needed beeswax that he asked for and tonight after dinner he comes down with a recipe (as easy as pie) and starts mixing things together.

Less than three minutes later, his hair wax was "done". Although it looked pretty liquid to me....but he assured me it would harden.

Sure enough it did.

Did it work?

Amazingly.

Even better than the "Surf Gel" he had been using, not at all sticky or greasy.

And may I add WAY less expensive and so much healthier.

I couldn't find his old hair gel on the Skin Deep Database but I have no doubt it would be a high rating.

Check out the spikiness (is that even a word?) he gets. He likes it spikey to say the least :)

So now when he's done slathering it on his hair to make his punk rock look, all he has to do is rub the remainder wax in his hands since it's all natural. Nice.

So here's the recipe:

1 cup Olive Oil

1/3 cup Beeswax

1 Tbs. Coconut Oil

Heat together in a pot until beeswax is fully melted. Remove from heat, let harden.

I got the beeswax at a local Health Food Store. It was like $23/lb (yikes!) But they had small containers of 0.165 lb for like $2 so it was pretty cheap, and there was some leftover after he made this first batch.

It looks like I'm rubbing off on my husband after all :)

Transferring Activity - Montessori

Transferring beans, rice, etc. from one container to another is a great practical life skill.

My daughter has always loved to do it.

She was just getting a little bored with transferring them from one bowl to the next.

So I tossed a few fun pots in there from another activity and she was happy again.

It also added the challenge of being more precise with her movements.

The small pots can be found at any craft store for super cheap and painted on your own if you wish.

Rice Box Fun!!

I wish I lived in a house.

I wish that house had a fenced in back yard.

I wish that backyard had a full size sandbox for my daughter to play in.

BUT, since I don't this rice box will have to do :)

Thankfully, she LOVES it!!

I took an old box, put cute scrapbook paper around it, taped the edges for durability, then added a ton of the cheapest rice I could find.

Next I added little things she could hide and dig up....big buttons, shells, etc.

Add a couple of shovels, small bowls AND a rule that the rice stays in the box, and you've got yourself a babysitter that your child will love :)

Smallest to Largest Activity

This activity went pretty well with my daughter.

She was able to put them in order when I prompted her by asking which one was the next largest.

With that being said, I guess it's up to each person to decide which is more important....convenience or safety.

Luxurious Moisturizing Body Oil

I loved the subtle fragrance of this oil, it was very pleasant. It went on smoothly and left my skin feeling soft and moisturized. The only downside is that I think I would go through the bottle so quickly! I know it says that you only need a couple drops but I felt I needed a little more than that to make my skin feel moisturized.

Counting Activity

Thurdays are counting days with my daughter. We are at 1-15 right now, she has known 1-10 for months but always confuses 13-15. We have number cards and a counting catepillar that we match up together on the floor. This part is simple for her. Next we place stones below the cards to correspond with the numbers. She doesn't quit get it yet but loves putting the stones down and is able to count them all by herself.

Setting the table - the Montessori Way!

I have always wanted to buy a placemat that helps a child to learn how to set a table. I never thought of making one myself until my friend Jodi put up a tutorial on her blog! Check it out here! I love the choice of fabric in her placemat below.

I tweaked her pattern a little bit to make one for my two year old. It is still a little rough around the edges (I am waiting for that promised serger from my mother-in-law) but I was so happy with how it turned out and the fact that my daughter LOVES using it!!

Montessori Music for Toddlers

Friday's are our music days.

My goals for music time with a two year old:

-Introduced simple music instruments

- Listen to upbeat songs and try to keep rhythm with maracas or a drum

- Sing, clap, have fun

For Small Hands has a variety of inexpensive music instruments. Below is my daughter using the Wooden Slide Whistle($4.50) which she was so intrigued with. It was super easy for her to use (age 2) and she had so much fun making her own music :)

We also love using wooden Maracas , they are beautifully painted and are the perfect size for small hands. We did get them from For Small Hands but I just found them for $1 each here!

Montessori Sorting Activity with Rookie Stix

In addition to being a great sorting activity this activity is also excellent for fine motor development. I got the Rookie Stix from For Small Hands, a great Montessori resource, for $4.95 for a set of 2. My daughter grasped the concept immediately and was so excited to use them.

You can use them to sort a variety of things. In the picture my daughter is sorting small pony tail holders (which she LOVES playing with) but I also have small different color pom poms (bought for cheap at any craft store) that she loves too. The "sorting" tray is used for paint, got that for super cheap at a craft store too.

Simplicity Parenting Treasures

So I have officially finished the book Simplicity Parenting by Kim John Payne, M.Ed.

There are so many treasures in it that I would like to share with you, but unfortunately that would keep you here for a couple hours.

So instead I am going to share with you a few of my favorite quotes from the book:

"Too much stuff leads to too little time and too little depth in the way kids see and explore their world."

"With "predictability" a child knows what to expect."

"Relationships are often built in the intervals, the space between activities, when nothing much is going on."

"Children who've had a role in preparing a meal assume ownership of it. More simply: When children make the food, they're less likely to throw it, or refuse it."

"Family dinners get much simpler when they're predictable: Monday pasta night, Tuesday rice night, Wednesday soup night, and so on." ( I LOVE this idea!)

"Before you say something, ask yourself these three questions: Is it true? Is it kind? Is it necessary?"

Now those quotes barely scratch the surface, but it's all I can offer at the moment :)

A reader asked me a couple weeks ago what my typical day/schedule looks like. Since a big part of Simplicity Parenting is on the Rhythm & Schedules of children I wanted to read it first before sharing my own.

Basically Payne says that children need to know what's next. They need predictability in their lives so that they can fully feel secure in their worlds. They also need time to just play. Payne says that boredom is a gift, a gift that should be freely given to children. It is only through boredom that creativity can be found. A child's daily or weekly schedule shouldn't be so packed that they don't have time to just "be".

In my case, I am home all day with my daughter. We only have one car and my husband is in school full-time. I get the car once or twice a week. On those days I do grocery shopping or other errands. I don't try to jam those days full of errands though because I know my daughter can only sit in a shopping cart/car seat for so long.

My typical day is very typical. For those who care, here is a brief summary :)

- Wake up, slowly make our way downstairs, coffee/breakfast (the coffee's just for me), dishes while Dear Daughter (DD) plays, food preparation with or without DD help, prayer time.

- Upstairs to get dressed, make the beds, tidy up the rooms, brush teeth. All the while DD just busies herself with whatever suits her.

- Downstairs to do daily cleaning, if she is able to DD helps me (like with dusting, "trying" to sweep, etc.)

- Snack/lunch time

- Activity. I usually have one type of activity I try to do with DD a day (which is a separate schedule) that I might do with her before her nap. I could really go into detail but for brevity's sake Mondays I do a classification/sorting activity, Tuesday I do sequencing, Wednesday I do matching/memory games, etc., then DD takes a nap.

Believe me it DOES take a couple hours to get to this point :) I just try to really be present to my daughter and if she wants me to read a couple books or play or do a puzzle, I do those things with her and when I am thru I proceed with what's next on my list.

- Wake up from nap, snack.

- Playtime. I try to go outside with her once a day if the weather permits, even in the cold weather. I think it's important for her to have a change of environment and she really does love being outside.

- Prepare dinner (we eat pretty early) while DD helps or just plays.

- Dinner time, I clean up while DD plays with her daddy. The rest of the evening is kind of up in the air.

- Bath time usually around 7 pm which can last up to 45 minutes, since she LOVES being in the water. Snack, read books and bed!

I do have to say that I love the calmness and simplicity of my days. While I was running my Etsy shop the days weren't so calm and stress free for me, but I have realized that I really do need to maintain a sense of peace within me in order to be the best Mother and Wife that I can be.

Montessori Sequencing Activity

Children just continue to amaze me.

I introduced this activity to my daughter about 3 months ago. She sat on my lap while I silently showed her how to match up the cards. Of course she wanted to try and it was clear that she didn't grasp the concept at all. I tried a few more times to no avail. So I decided to put it away for a while.

Last month I got it out again and without me even showing her again she wanted to do it "all by self". Okay, I thought, good luck! She then proceeded to do the entire activity all by herself PERFECTLY. And not only just one sequence at a time but with all of them laid out in front of her at once.

I am reading Maria Montessori's Absorbent Mind right now and it really just continues to amaze me how children have the ability to absorb everything even without us knowing it.

Simplicity Parenting

I didn't technically make a New Year's resolution this year.

I guess I half forgot to and half thought it was pointless since I never really stick to them anyways :/

But as I think about it now I did make a very simple resolution at the beginning of 2010, whether I was intending it to be my New Year's resolution or not. I decided to temporarily close my Etsy shop.

I know, I know, I've built it up for so many months and business was going great and yada yada yada.

I think actually part of the problem was that business was going so well that I sort of lost focus of my first two vocations in life...that of being a wife and mother.

I needed to start my Etsy shop last year, I needed to have a creative outlet all the while being a stay-at-home mom. I needed to know I could bring in the dough on my own accord.

So I proved all those things very well.

Yes I could do it, yes I was capable.

I also proved a lot of other things.

I was a much testier person when I had deadlines to meet and orders to fulfill on time.

I let my cooking slide and lost the joy I once found in preparing healthy and yummy food for my family. I often got annoyed that I had a little person tagging at my shirt because I just had "one more thing to finish!"

So I am taking a break.

And I must say it feels...very good. :)

So after I had started to simplify my own life a little I read about a book called, "Simplicity Parenting" by Kim John Payne, M.Ed.

Perfect, I thought, I SO need to read that.

Well I am about a chapter into in and I have to say that I can already tell it is one I will have to buy very soon because I am hating the fact that I can't highlight like every other sentence in my borrowed copy!

Basically, here's the gist of it all. The author has been a school counselor and family-counselor therapist for many years and has found that the missing piece in many children's lives is simplicity. As a result so many children are suffering from anxiety, ADD, ADHD, OCD. Children are being so bombarded with toys, books, activities, that they don't have time to be children! Take out 3/4 of all they have in their life and they will be happier, less anxious, more attentive, etc.

He outlines 4 ares of life that need to be simplified: their environment, rhythm, schedules and filtering out of the adult world.

Now since I haven't read the entire book yet I can't go too much in-depth but I have to say I love what he says about a child's environment. Much of it goes along with the Montessori principles that I already love and have put into practice. He suggests only having half a dozen books on the shelf at a time. The rest can be put away and used as a sort of library to borrow from every week. Toys should be kept at a bare minimum and should be mostly limited to those items that foster creativity in a child. So think of all those toys that are supposed to "entertain" your child...pitch em. In their place put building blocks, puzzles, creative materials, construction toys, etc.

I have mostly tried to keep the amount of toys my daughter has down to a minimum anyways but I went even further in the past couple of days...I mean honestly there are so many things in our living room she hasn't touched in weeks! So off to storage they went!

The same with books too....we have SO many books I didn't know where to keep them all, plus I was going to the library once a week too, and i noticed that my daughter really was losing interest in reading all together. So out went the books. And literally, like magic i swear ( which I don't' even believe in) she was super interested in her books again.

I will definitely write more about the book when I read more....stay tuned!

I received Naturity's Belly Massage Oil to review and was very pleased with the product. When I was pregnant I was super cautious about what I put in and on my body for fear of hurting my growing baby, that's one of the reason's why Naturity's products excite me so much!

The Belly Massage Oil was very easy to rub on and did not leave a super oily feeling left on my skin afterwards, unlike the cocoa butter I had used during my first pregnancy. The smell of it is very pleasant smelling and actually brought me back to my childhood when we used to crack open vitamin e capsules to put on our cuts. I highly recommend the Belly oil!

Next we have Naturity's Organic Babyhood line, which is vegan friendly and nut and wheat free.

All of the Babyhood products are free of chemicals, fragrances, additives and synthetic preservatives. Naturity doesn't use any essential oils that may cause irritation. All products have been tested and are safe for baby skin.

Naturity's Organic Babyhood line includes Diaper balm, Baby Massage Oil & Baby Powder as well as a Welcome Baby Bucket including those three.

I received the Baby Massage oil to review as well and I'll repeat what I said above about the Belly oil, it was very easy to put on and didn't leave the skin feeling oily at all. As advertised this oil was fragrance free.

Last but not least we have Naturity's Body-Bath line. All products contain pure, unrefined organic ingredients gentle enough to use daily on the body or in the bath to nurture healthy skin. All products available in unscented and six herbal scents.

Products include Massage Oil, Sugar Body Scrub, Salt soak, Herbal Bath blend, and 2 gift baskets as well.

I received the Sweet orange bath salt soak to review. I was very happy to have an excuse to have to take a bath (the first one in two years since my daughter was born!)

The aroma was very pleasant, not too strong at all. It left my skin feeling smooth and moist and not in much need of lotion application afterwards like I usually do. Highly recommended!

Here is a Clothes Pin Activity which is a great way to enhance your child's fine motor skills and muscles through a color matching activity.

This next activity was sent to me for my daughter to try out. The Treasure Chest Color Sorting Activity is a great way to reinforce the child's visual sense of the colors as well as his/her ability to sort objects.

This activity is suggested for 3 years and up. However I did let my daughter use it with close supervision. She is under 2 years and LOVED the look of it, she was so excited to use it! She had mastered color sorting previous to this activity but the red & orange were really challenging for her in this activity. I was excited about that since you always want to give your child a challenge or they get bored with it. I can definitely recommend this product with first-hand experience!

Young children cannot use imagination or abstract thinking to learn about the world. Montessori Activities - Bottles & Tops + Matching Shapes

Hope everyone is having a great Thursday! I am glad to finally see some sunshine after a couple rainy days!

I have two activities to share today. The first one consists of bottles/tops that can no doubt be found around your house. Using different shapes and sizes would maximize the activity.

Bottle & Tops Directions:
Put the bottles & tops in front of your child, slowly place each top on it's corresponding bottle and screw on. Your child may want to take over. If the child is still too young to accomplish screwing each lid on securely it's still a great activity for matching and understanding different sizes.

My daughter enjoys stacking the bottles after she is done and even seeing if some fit inside others. Let your child explore as they want, of course if the child starts using the bottles in inappropriate ways just put the activity away for another time.

When finished have the child put them back on a tray and put back in the place where they belong.
The next activity is a matching activity. I have a die cutter which I used to cut out different shapes in a variety of sizes. If you don't have this, any craft store will most likely carry foam shapes in an assortment of sizes.

Matching Directions:

Lay one of each shape out on a table. I started with four shapes and gradually added to it according to my daughter's ability. Have the corresponding shapes laid out randomly underneath. Slowly put each shape underneath (or on top of) the corresponding shape. Your child may take over as he/she wants. Use a minimal amount of words.

Matching Sizes Directions:

Do the same as above but add different sizes of each shape for increased difficulty. I started with a small, medium and large star. I then added other small, medium & large shapes according to my daughters ability. Below my daughter is seen matching hearts, stars and flowers.

What I love about Montessori activities is the simplicity of them. It's not complicated or ground-breaking material but simple, straight forward excercises to challenge our children.

Don't break my concentration!

Whenever my daughter is deeply involved in an activity I literally tip toe around my apartment to allow her to keep enjoying her "work". But of course when I try to be the most quiet that's the time when I accidentally drop a pot or slam a cupboard or something. And then, pitter patter, little one is right there wanting to help me or wanting me to help her :)

I have been reading "Montessori from the Start, the Child at Home, from Birth to Age Three" by Lillard & Jessen (a must read if you have any interest in Montessori for your little one!)

I came across something that supports my anal need for quietness in my home when my daughter is occupied...I thought I would share :)

"In creating an environment that encourages concentration, it is important to remember that if the child becomes conscious of anything other than the task at hand, his concentration is broken. (so true for my daughter!) By applauding, saying "wonderful", giving a kiss or whatever, the well-meaning adult draws the child's attention to the adult and away from the task at hand. Too much such interference, and the child becomes self-conscious. When we are self-conscious, it is very hard to concentrate on the task at hand, whatever our age. To see this we only have to remember the problems we have in sports when we let our thoughts stray to the impression we are making on onlookers, or in giving a speech when we focus on our appearance instead of the audience and the message we want to give. When the child becomes deeply and constructively absorbed in a task, it is important to avoid drawing his attention to what the adults around him are thinking of what he is doing."

Lillard & Jessen go on to address the importance in encouraging and developing a child's concentration from very young. Today the numbers of children with attention problems have skyrocketed, why? There could be a number of factors but one that they present is that it may be possible that just as there is a Sensitive Period for language from birth to age 6, is it possible that there is "Sensitive period for the development of sustained attention - a time period when the child should have developed concentration and not having done so is handicapped for the rest of his life?"

When walking into a Montessori classroom, one is almost always struck by the peacefulness of the environment. Children, even at a very young age, are busy with their work. Busy furthering their self-formation in an environment that lets them concentrate and work as they will.

I just love the Montessori Philosophy, can you tell?

I've got two more activities to share with you as well. :)

The first is another sorting activity and you won't have to buy anything for this one!

Who loves beans? My daughter does, but not to eat, to sort.

Put two or more different kinds of beans in a bowl and sort them into their own containers. I used garbanzo and pinto beans here. It is amazing how such a simple activity can occupy a child for so long! (once again adult supervision is a must for this activity as it uses small objects)

The second activity is flash cards!

Now, I HATED flash cards growing up. I remember doing math flashcards with my mom and I dreaded them.

My daughter on the other hand LOVES them.

I purchased ABC and shape flashcards from Target before going on a plane ride with my daughter, hoping to keep her occupied with something new. She was 18 months at the time. She sat for an entire hour in my lap on the plane looking at the ABC cards. Coming home from the trip the cards made an appearance every day, she loved them. And I am very proud to say that by 19 months she knew her entire alphabet by sight and could pronounce(for the most part) each letter. She also knows her shapes too! Although octagon and pentagon pretty much sound the same coming out of her mouth :)

Children just crave learning! It really is amazing how much they absorb and how much they want to absorb it!

Color Sorting Activity & Stacking Spools

One of the first Montessori activities I introduced to my daughter was sorting different color buttons. This activity was recommended for 2 years and up so I was extremely surprised that my daughter was able to accomplish the task at 19 months. Children really are like sponges. You put something in front of them, show them how it's done and before you know it they are pros at it!

As you can see from the pictures nothing had to be bought to do this activity. I used objects from around the house, just be creative!

Directions:

Put all the buttons in one container with the separate containers out in front that you will be sorting them into. With very little words/explanation start sorting the buttons yourself, saying the colors. If your child wants to try, let them take over. If they try to put a wrong color button in a container simply intervene gently and direct them.

Once all the buttons are sorted show your child how to pour all the buttons back into the main bowl. Congratulate your child! If your child wants to do it again (and again and again) let them :) Once your child is finished put the bowls back on the tray and have them carry it back on the shelf in it's place. (Or have them carry it into the room where you store it, this is what I do for many of my activities I don't leave in arm's reach of my daughter).

I first started with 4 different colors, pink, yellow, orange and green. She mastered this very quickly and got bored with it after a week or so.

So I then gave her five different colors to sort, blue, purple, green, orange and pink. The purple and blue were difficult to differentiate for her but she eventually got it.

Another "activity" my daughter loves to do when I am sewing is to play with my thread spools. Any child loves stacking, it is such a great activity for coordination & concentration. She loves her blocks and uses them so much that she welcomes a little change once in a while. She amazed me one day when I looked over and saw she had stacked 10 spools on top of one another, almost out of her reach!

Of course great care and supervision should be taken with BOTH these activity since buttons are small and can be a choking hazard, thread spools as well. I assure you that in my small apartment my daughter is literally at my side at all times and closely supervised with these activities. I don't keep these activities within her reach when she is not working with them. :)

Montessori - Introducing Activities

Hello again! This is the third post on Montessori that I have done and I feel like I have just skimmed the surface! I wanted to lay a basic framework for mothers wanting to introduce Montessori to their toddler and I think these 3 posts will do pretty much that.

So now that you have a basic gist of the philosophy of Montessori and what type of environment suits it best, the next step is how to introduce the activities to your child.

When demonstrating activities to a child use a minimum of words and movements. The child should be allowed to work with the materials only after they have been presented to him. Introduce new materials gradually and be patient, remember that your role should be an observer. It is hard for mothers to restrain themselves and not show the child how to do it. Let them work it out on their own and eventually they will.

All Montessori activities have a "control of error", which allow the child to see his mistakes when doing the activity in the wrong way. Even so, children must be guided in their proper use.

An atmosphere of quiet should be kept during school time. Absolute silence isn't completely necessary but an atmosphere conducive to concentration is key.

The child should be allowed to choose what they want to work with, even if it is the same thing for three days in a row. As the child masters and progresses beyond certain materials they should be removed. Children are always looking to be challenged.

Once the activity is chosen it can be worked with as long as the child pleases but the task must be completed before the material is returned to its place. Perseverance is a good lesson in self-discipline.

The time spent with school should be no more than one and a half to two hours at most. In the first few weeks, especially if you are working with a very young child, forty-five minutes should be sufficient.

But now what activities do you do??? There are a TON of books that would be great resources for you, the local library should carry all you need to know.

I was a little concerned at the beginning of my Montessori craze that I would have to spend SO much money on new activities for my daughter, but in reality I didn't. Many activities use items found in your home, just try and be creative. Also, most craft stores have a plethora of ideas/items to make your own activities for relatively cheap. Although I did invest in stacking blocks, puzzles and a few other standard items that any growing brain needs :)

Of course I would love to transform my home, put in new shelving, ya know just totally make it a Montessori home....but that will have to wait.

Montessori Materials & Environment

Hello everyone!

Last time I gave a little bit of an overview on the basic principles of the Montessori method. This post I would like to talk about the materials that should be used for Montessori activities and the ideal environment these activities should be done in.

Materials

One of the goals of the Montessori method is to bring children back to a more natural environment. This means using wood, glass, ceramic as opposed to plastic. Part of the learning process involves using care when handling breakables. A natural consequence of inappropriate handling is they break. Plastic doesn’t necessarily teach the children to be careful. When it drops, it bounces. Everything is okay. Using all plastic gives children the false sense that they can be rough with things and they in turn do not quite learn how to respect the item.

Does is make me nervous though to watch my daughter carry glass containers across our kitchen floor? Yes, but I also love to see how CAREFUL she is with it. She really concentrates on carrying it perfectly to her destination. We also have carpet in our living room where most activities take place so I don't fear her dropping and breaking things while she is working with them. Wood, glass, etc. are also heavier than plastic so it gives children a feel for differences in weight and how to be careful in putting those items down on the table carefully.

Of course budget does come into play, so just do what you can with what you have. Second-hand stores, garage sales, and dollar stores are great places to find inexpensive glass jars, ceramic items, etc. So be creative!

Environment

It is suggested to have a specific place to keep your school equipment and a specific room in which to conduct "school". The reason for this is to let your child depend on the permanence of this arrangement and know where each piece of equipment may be found. "A place for everything and everything in its place."

The items should be nicely arranged and laid out on open shelves for the child to easily take an activity off the shelf to use. Once an activity is done, the child should always put it back where it belongs. In this way he is taught order and respect for things. My daughter got the hang of this very easily. Rather than leaving all her toys out on the floor, she really has taken to putting them away where they go when she is done. She doesn't do this all the time by herself but she will if I ask her.

If you don't have a specific room that can be used for school you can also used a roll away shelf that can be rolled into a closet when not in use.

I personally live in an apartment at the time and don't even have the luxury of doing that. At the time I have some Montessori activities tucked away in a back hallway on a shelf, it is not ideal but it allows my daughter to be able to work with what she wants and put it back when she is done.

Next week I will touch on how to introduce activities to your child and give you a few activities I have used with my daughter.

Maria Montessori - The Beginning

I am on a Montessori kick right now :) I have started doing many montessori activities with my 19-month old daughter and she has responded so well that I really have a desire to plunge into this method of teaching as much as I can.

For those of you who may be new to the Montessori method I would like to give a brief introduction to Maria Montessori's philosophy for my first post on Montessori.

I briefly quoted the main ideas behind the philosophy below, as read in Teaching Montessori in the Home by Elizabeth G. Hainstock.

"Maria Montessori believed that education begins at birth and that the first few years of life, being the most formative, are the most important, physically and mentally.

Proper learning methods in the years from birth to six years will largely determine the kind of adult the child will become.

Montessori felt that in these early years a child has a what she referred to as "sensitive periods", during which time he is particularly receptive to certain stimuli. If parents are aware of these periods, much can be done to help the child at the right time.

Sensitive Periods

birth- 3 yrs Absorbent mind, Sensory experiences

1 1/2 - 3 yrs Language Development

1 1/2 - 4 yrs Coordination & muscle development

2-4 yrs Refinement of movement, concern with truth & reality,

Aware of order sequence in time & Space

2 1/2- 6 yrs Sensory refinement

3-6 yrs Susceptibility to adult influence

3 1/2-4 1/2 yrs Writing

4- 4 1/2 yrs Tactile sense

4 1/2-5 1/2 yrs Reading

Education need not be imposed on the child; given a learning environment he will be free to act and to develop himself along the lines of his own inner direction.

Children have a natural desire to learn and work, along with a strong willingness to please. Children would rather learn than simply be entertained or amused."

Since doing research on the harm certain chemicals in plastic can do to your children I have been surveying my daughters toys to weed out the unsafe ones.

The other day while she was taking a bath I realized that EVERY toy she was playing with probably contained these harmful chemicals. And she was bathing in them for at least 10 minutes every night, yikes!

So of course I took off on my internet search for safe bath toys. And was very happy to find many companies that offer BPA & Phthalate free bath toys.

Montessori for Toddlers

Let's just say I am hooked on Montessori.

I actually went to a montessori school for two years when I was younger, but don't really remember much about it.

The next time Montessori was brought to my attention was for potty training. I started to put the methods for potting training in practice a couple months ago. My daughter is now 19 months and she has already gone on the potty numerous times, yay! I really want to go full out with the training but I have to find a week where I don't have to go anywhere (which is going to be practically impossible).

I recently starting researching Montessori for toddlers and am loving what I am learning!

I plan on doing a series of posts on it in the next few weeks so stay tuned! I know you will just LOVE these practices.

Why plastics can harm your children - Part 2 - Phthalates

So I'm back again to tell you more about the things that could be harmful for your children :) Sounds like a great read right? Although it may not be FUN to read about these things, I consider it my duty to stay educated.

So here goes.

Phthalates are another harmful substance in plastics, especially for chilren, including those in utero.

Phthalates are a family of chemical compounds that are used to stabilize fragrances and increase the flexibility of plastics. They have been used in plastics since the 1930's and it's only recently that concerns have been raised. Phthalates are under attack by many environmental organizations who claim that there is strong evidence that these chemicals cause reproductive defects and early-onset of puberty in children.

Phthalates are a hormone-altering chemical. Baby powders, oils, lotions, shampoos and other products with phthalate additives, are linked to endocrine and reproductive system problems. Babies who are cared for with phthalate-laced products and cosmetics show developmental problems, especially in reproductive development of male children.

If you wish to error on the side of caution, how do you avoid phthalates? In terms of food and beverage containers and children's toys you should avoid any soft PVC. You can identify PVC on containers by examining the recycling triangle that appears on the bottom of most containers. PVC has a number 3 in the triangle. I was so happy to learn this great tip!

Otherwise only buy products that say Phthalate free on them.

Why plastics can harm your children - Part 1 - BPA

If you haven't heard the hype over BPA and phthlates in plastics, I hope to give a brief overview in a two part post.

I feel sometimes like I just want to cover my ears about all that is bad for us, but when it comes to my own child I feel I have a responsibility to know the truth and really try to protect my daughter from all that is harmful.

This post will just be a brief overview pointing you to broader resources since there is SO much info out there on the dangers of BPA. Although it may seem a little technical at times, believe me it is WORTH READING.

Okay here we go.

"Bisphenol A (BPA) is a chemical building block that is used primarily to make polycarbonate plastic and epoxy resins. Polycarbonate plastic is a lightweight, high-performance plastic that possesses a unique balance of toughness, optical clarity, high heat resistance, and excellent electrical resistance. Because of these attributes, polycarbonate is used in a wide variety of common products including digital media (e.g., CDs, DVDs), electrical and electronic equipment, automobiles, sports safety equipment, reusable food and drink containers , and many other products."

"BPA is also used in the production of epoxy resins....Cured epoxy resins are inert materials used as protective liners in metal cans to maintain the quality of canned foods and beverages..." (referenced here)

The main problems comes about because BPA actually leaches out of the plastic and into our food, drinks, etc.

What comes about is various health problems and dangers especially for children.

Should young children watch TV?

I heard a while ago that Dr. James Dobson suggested that children not watch television until age two. At that time my daughter was very young and not at all interested in TV so I wasn't concerned.

Well, Dr. James Dobson's suggestion slipped my mind and about a month ago, my daughter fell in love with Elmo. So I thought I would get her a Sesame Street DVD (we don't have cable). Needless to say, she became addicted and EVERY morning she repeats "Melmo, melmo, melmo!" until I put the video on for her. I was thrilled in fact that I could get 45 minutes of computer/work time in while she was being "educated" by Sesame Street.

But then reality hit home this morning as I was doing research for this post. I was shocked in fact to read that the American Association of Pediatricians recommends that children shouldn't watch TV at all — not until they are age two.

Even Sesame Street? But it's so educational! Well, this sort of burst my bubble:

"In the early days of "Sesame Street," producers noticed that the program wasn't moving fast enough on street scenes to keep kids' attention. What did they do? They utilized advertising research which showed that the best way to engage viewers was through ad-like shorts with quick movement, bursts of color, and loud noises. The result was a cross between entertainment and education, which became known as "edutainment." Sure enough, it's kept kids attention since 1969. But can fast-paced ad-like programming make kids hyperactive? Some researchers think so. "

There was a study done of 2,500 children, ages birth to 3, who watched one hour of television daily. The study showed direct ties to as much as a 10% loss of attentiveness when they reached age seven. The reason for this is the "considerable plasticity" that exists in a childrens brain at this age. By watching TV children's brains are being wired to respond to visual stimulation and multiple visual exposures simultaneously. For more info read this article.

Yikes. Well that's enough proof for me. I hope a months worth of TV watching didn't fry my daughters brain for good.

I guess now my biggest challenge will be breaking her morning "Melmo" habit.

Eat Seaweed?

Yes! In the form of a kelp supplement! Sound crazy? Well listen to all the health benefits you can recieve from it!

I started taking kelp a few years ago when I thought I had an underactive thyroid. Iodine, found in kelp, is a necessary mineral to help the body produce thyroid hormones. I didn't end up having a thyroid problem so I eventually stopped taking it. It has been sitting in my vitamin

A few days ago I read an article by a man who took kelp to counteract all the radiation from cell phones, among other things, he encounters on a daily basis.

Hmmm, I thought...I didn't know it helped for that! So I recovered my kelp bottle from the closet, dusted it off and did some research!

This is what I found. Kelp has been used for thousands of years for a variety of reasons. Here are some specifics:

- Having a decreased thyroid function because of the lack of iodine in your diet can lead to weight gain and lethargy. So people take kelp to boost energy and weight loss.

- Japanese scientists have shown that kelp may inhibit the development of breast cancer.

- Kelp may help remove heavy metals, radioactive particles, and other potentially toxic substances from the body.

- Kelps and other seaweeds rich in iodine and other nutrients were shown in an animal experiment to suppress the thyroid's ability to absorb radioactive iodine, thus potentially preventing the organ from being injured by the harmful effects of radiation.

***I must note though that Kelp can also be high in sodium and may need to be taken with caution by anyone following a salt-restricted diet.***

AND kelp is dirt cheap!! I got a bottle of 100 tablets for under $4 at GNC.

Needless to say I added kelp to our daily vitamin menu :)

Doesn't it feel good being healthy? :)

Pacifier Guilt

We decided before our daughter was born not to give her a pacifier.

I was preparing to exclusively breastfeed and according to WHO (World Health Organization) and UNICEF that meant for the first six months:

- The infant only receives breastmilk without any additional food or drink, not even water
- Breastfeed on demand – that is as often as the child wants, day and night
- No use of bottles, teats or pacifiers

Supposedly if these steps are not followed that can mean an early return of fertility for some women.

Okay easy enough. Plus I had heard that one should wait until nursing was well established before giving a pacifier, around 3 months.

I wanted to do everything PERFECTLY as a new mother. I knew babies had a high need for sucking, and why would God create this in a child if he didn't want them to nurse frequently, right?

Well....I still believe that. BUT I did end up giving my daughter a pacifier at six months. And she didn't willingly take it. I had to teach her to like it.

We mainly wanted to introduce it to her for car rides and sleep. She hated the car, nursing was the only thing that would calm her down. And sleeping? Well, she pretty much needed to be attached to me to do that.

So now she is 18 months old and occasionally takes a pacifier. Mostly when she first goes to sleep and in the car when I can't do anything else to make her happy.

It pacifies her so well that it really is so tempting to give it to her when she gets fussy or won't be quiet in church.

And if I do, there's always a feeling of guilt. Guilt of what? I'm not sure. Maybe of not living up completely to my ideals of being a perfect mother.

That fact became crystal clear to me in the first few days of her life! I am NOT a perfect mother, and I never will be. I try to be. But I fail. Often.

I suppose I have come to the realization that it is OKAY to give your child a pacifier in certain circumstances. I probably won't give my next newborn one, I just don't want to foster that dependency on a pacifier so early in life.

Although my daughter uses a pacifier now she is by no means dependent on it. She likes it. But she doesn't need it. And I guess that's the most important thing to me.

Meet "Summer"

This is the first doll I have ever made.

And I have to say I am pretty proud of myself.

This little 10 inch doll has stolen my heart.

And my daughters.

I keep saying to my husband, "Isn't she so cute?!"

He agreed the first couple of times.

But he finally looked at me and said, "Honey, it's just a doll."

I guess guys don't get excited over those kinda things, huh?

I am currently working on my own doll pattern and

will soon be adding dolls to the Sweety Baby line!

I LOVE coffee. Words cannot describe how much I look forward to that warm cup of freshly ground french roast in the morning with a generous serving of french vanilla creamer.

My day wouldn't be the same without it.

Because of my love of coffee I am so thrilled when I read about it's numerous health benefits. Maybe I am behind the times but I just read the other day that coffee has antioxidants in it! In fact coffee is the number one source of antioxidants in the American diet! Wow! (especially when you grind the beans right before brewing)

Coffee has so many things going for it, check out just a couple of it's other benefits:

- Cuts the risk of type 2 diabetes and Parkinson's disease, especially when you drink a lot of it.
- Two cups daily translates to a 25% reduced risk of colon cancer, and nearly half the risk of gallstones.

And what about the saying that coffee dehydrates you? Well, it's not true!!
